BHIWANI: Faced with a skewed sex ratio, desperate families are resorting to devious schemes to push alliances. In one such case coming out of the hinterland of Haryana, a veteran woman married off her 14-year-old granddaughter without the knowledge of her parents last week.
Arrested on Thursday, she told cops, "I did it to arrange for a daughter-in-law in exchange."
Produced in the court along with seven other accused in the case, the woman, her two daughters, four sons and the minor's husband, were sent in 14-day judicial remand by the magistrate.
Looking for a bride for her younger son, Bateri, a resident of Bidola village in Tosham subdivision, had approached a family in Prabhuwala village of Jind, and was told to arrange for a girl for their son. Her granddaughter Gudiya, who stayed with her, became an easy victim and was married off without her parents knowledge or consent.
While police have booked Gudiya's husband, a major, for rape, others have been slapped abduction charges.
